Murungidyal Paddling Pathways 2025

ABOUT

Through Rough Waters, We Rise

THRIV3 is a registered not-for-profit charity based in regional and remote Australia. We are dedicated to strengthening rural communities through culturally grounded programs that connect youth, community members, and frontline service workers in transformative and life-affirming ways.

At the heart of our work is the Murungidyal Paddling Pathways Program – an immersive, on-country initiative designed to support at-risk youth and emergency services personnel through nature-based healing, cultural connection, and practical life skills.

The program brings together young people aged 14–18 from socially, economically, or geographically disadvantaged backgrounds – many of whom have experienced trauma, including domestic and family violence – and pairs them with members of critical frontline services such as police, paramedics, firefighters, educators, health workers, defence personnel, and SES.

Each participant is paired one-on-one in a tandem kayak, embarking on a multi-day expedition along remote rivers. Together, they paddle, camp, cook, and connect – forming strong bonds, breaking down barriers, and reshaping perceptions. We see youth who begin the week mistrusting authority figures leave with lifelong mentors and respect for the services, while the adults gain renewed hope and understanding of the younger generation.

Importantly, Murungidyal – meaning healing – also reflects the journey our emergency services personnel undertake. Many participants come to us with the weight of cumulative stress, PTSD, or emotional fatigue from their roles. The camp provides a safe, culturally grounded space for them to talk openly about what they’ve seen, what they carry, and how it’s affected them. Around the fire and on the water, they are given the time, trust, and support to speak – rather than bottle it up.

This dual healing approach – for both youth and adults – is the core of what makes this program so impactful. There's nothing more powerful than sitting around a fire under the stars and truly being heard.

Murungidyal Paddling Pathways is not limited by culture, gender, ability, or background. While deeply rooted in First Nations values, we proudly welcome all people – creating inclusive, respectful, and empowering experiences for everyone who joins.

This is more than a paddling trip. It’s a movement – a pathway to healing, mentorship, cultural pride, and stronger, more compassionate communities.
